The goal of the International Primary Curriculum is for children to focus on a combination of academic, personal and international learning. We want children to enjoy their learning; develop enquiring minds, develop the personal qualities they need to be good citizens of the world, and develop a sense of their own nationality and culture, at the same time developing a profound respect for the nationalities and cultures of others. Most of all, we want children to develop the skills they will need in order to confidently face the world of tomorrow.
Children learn through a series of IPC units of work. Each unit has a theme that today's children find interesting and relevant. Examples of themes for our milepost: "Celebrations", "Time Detectives", and "Toys". Each unit lasts between four and eight weeks and children learn many of their subjects through this common theme so that their learning has meaning for them.
Components of IPC units of work:
- Entry point: to catch the children's interest - the 'wow'-factor
- Knowledge Harvest: to find out what the children already know - we work from where children are
- Explaining the theme: talking to the children about what they are going to learn and do
- Tasks and activities: individual, pair, group and all-class activities for each subject being taught
- Assessment: evaluating student progress
- Exit point: - a special ending activity: an exhibit of work, a celebration, assembly presentation etc.
The children in Primary 2 and Primary 3 are in the same Milepost, which means that they're following the same units. Of course these are differentiated by outcome.
Regularly, P2 and P3 work together. Sometimes we also meet up with our peers of the French language Stream to work together on tasks.
